Department of Interventional Radiology

The unique department of interventional radiology at Bulovka was established in March 2025 as the first independently operating department of its kind in the Czech Republic.

Interventional radiology is dedicated to the treatment of the whole person, except for the heart, which remains the domain of cardiologists. The basic characteristic of this field is interventional minimally invasiveness, conditioned by modern and highly specialized imaging and treatment equipment.

The Department of Interventional Radiology at Bulovka is exceptional both in its technical specification and the designation of its own workplace.

Individual examination modalities (X-ray, CT, ultrasound) were concentrated in one examination site, which is also a super-aseptic operating room. The so-called hybrid theatre is used for hybrid procedures, where part of the procedures are performed using interventional radiology techniques and part as open surgery. This seemingly complex arrangement gives us all the combined advantages of surgical and endovascular treatment in one time. For the patient, this is essential because of the resolution of a complex disease in one operation or one anaesthesia and hospitalisation, which of course also minimises the associated risks.

Specialists from the Department of Interventional Radiology are also an integral part of multidisciplinary collaboration throughout the hospital, participating in interdisciplinary indication seminars and in the joint treatment of patients not only within the FNB.
