Gastroenterology Department

The Gastroenterology Department (GEO) was created in 2024 by separating the Gastroenterology Outpatient Department and Endoscopy Department from the Internal Medicine Department. It focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of diseases of the digestive tract, liver, biliary tract and pancreas, including the diagnosis and treatment of malignant diseases, screening for colorectal cancer, screening for pancreatic cancer and treatment of idiopathic bowel disease (IBD). In hepatology we perform transient elastography and non-targeted liver biopsy.

Prof. Mařatka's legacy

Our department tries to continue the historically most famous era of Czech gastroenterology, which was represented worldwide by Prof. MUDr. Zdeněk Mařatka, DrSc., who was the head of the internal medicine clinic at the Bulovka Hospital in 1958-1984. He was a pioneer and founder of Czechoslovak and thus Czech gastroenterology. That is one of the reasons why he was awarded the title of Knight of the Czech medical state in 2001.

Digestive endoscopy

The Gastroenterology Department includes a digestive endoscopy unit, where the whole spectrum of endoscopic examinations is performed - gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, cholangioscopy and EHL (electrohydraulic lithotripsy, EUS and navigated drainage procedures, ESD (endoscopic submucosal dissection), etc.

The workstation also operates in standby mode for the needs of hospitalized patients and provides 24-hour endoscopic service.

Institute of Gastrointestinal Oncology (IGEO)

GEO is part of FN Bulovka Institute of Gastrointestinal Oncology (IGO), which provides comprehensive care for patients with malignant diseases so that patients receive ideal individualized diagnostic and therapeutic care.
