Modern technical equipment enables the performance of some highly specialised radiotherapy techniques:
- stereotactic radiotherapy: a technique that enables very precise delivery of high doses of radiation in a small number of fractions to localised tumour foci.
- respiratory gating: a technique that allows tracking changes in the position of the irradiated volume depending on the patient's breathing cycle in order to reduce the dose to healthy tissue; at our department, this method is mostly used in the irradiation of breast tumours in the so-called
- whole-body irradiation of patients with hematological malignancies.
- hyperthermia: in indicated cases, it is used to increase the effectiveness of radiation treatment; our department is one of the few departments in the Czech Republic that offers hyperthermia treatment to patients.
- Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) technique, which uses continuous optical scanning of the patients surface to accurately position the patient and increase the safety of radiation treatment.
The department also deals with re-irradiation (re-irradiation of tumors that have recurred after previous radiation treatment), the application of alternative fractionation regimens for radiation therapy, and the combination of radiation with other modalities of anticancer treatment (chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy).
In the brachyradiotherapy (internal radiation) section, treatment is performed on Elekta's state-of-the-art Flexitron high dose rate (HDR) machine. The most common indications for brachyradiotherapy at our department are gynaecological cancers and breast cancer.
The radiotherapy department is located in pavilion 16.

Non-cancer (anti-inflammatory) radiotherapy
The department also has a therapeutic X-ray irradiator installed for non-cancer (anti-inflammatory) radiotherapy. This is a medical radiation treatment that is performed for selected inflammatory and degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system. The goal of non-cancerous radiation is relief from the discomfort. Most commonly, this includes heel spurs, pain in advanced arthritis of the joints (e.g., knee, hip, and shoulder), or joint inflammation (e.g., tennis elbow).
A treatment course is determined during the initial examination by the physician. In most cases, non-tumor therapy is applied in 6 fractions, 2 x weekly for 3 weeks.
To the examination it is necessary to bring:
- application for examination (issued by orthopedist, rehabilitation doctor, surgeon)
- x-ray image of the area to be treated, with description, uploaded to the FNB ePACS system or printed on paper (not on CD), no older than 3 months
- patients who have already received non-tumor therapy at another site should bring an extra copy of documentation, including information on doses administered
- this treatment is not performed 6-8 weeks after injectable corticosteroid therapy in the same area
