Centre for the care of women and children with suspected congenital developmental defects

Thanks to interdisciplinary collaboration, we are able to offer comprehensive care from prenatal diagnosis and comprehensive counselling in pregnancy through management delivery to neonatal surgery for selected congenital developmental defects, including surgery for premature babies.

The activities of the Centre are carried out in close cooperation by the expert medical staff of the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Traumatology, the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine and the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University, the Neonatology Department and the Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department. The aim of the Centre is to help families who are expecting a child with a suspected congenital developmental defect. Parents of an unborn child whose ultrasound examination in pregnancy establishes the suspicion of the presence of a congenital defect often experience uncertainty until the defect is confirmed and the next course of action is determined. Often they then search for information on their own and find it difficult to navigate. The Centre offers parents expert consultations, counselling and assistance with the organisation of care.

Diagnostics

The Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine and the First Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University offers pregnant women preventive screening examination of fetal morphology. In the event that a suspicion of a congenital fetal developmental defect is diagnosed, it is important to relieve parents of uncertainty, to provide them with the opportunity to learn what is in store for their child, as well as themselves, and what steps will follow.

Preparation of an optimal care plan

Thanks to the interdisciplinary collaboration set up within the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Trauma, we are able to offer a clear optimal care plan in one place, without the need for complicated referrals to other specialized facilities.

Birth Defects Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery and Trauma provides neonatal surgery for birth defects such as developmental defects of the digestive tract - atresia of the duodenum, small and large intestine or anorectal malformations (congenital diseases of the rectum and anus). After discussion with the family, we are ready to offer, in the outpatient clinic or at the bedside during hospitalization, a detailed consultation of the findings. We will outline the treatment options, explain the exact surgical procedure, describe the expected postoperative condition and any life changes that would await the operated newborn. We also offer the same consultation to families with a newborn who are hospitalized in the sixth-grade or neonatology department, right at the bedside. The subsequent surgery takes place in well-equipped operating rooms and the patient is in the hands of specialists with many years of experience. Every congenital developmental defect should be continuously monitored until adulthood, which is why we provide not only post-operative monitoring of patients, but also long-term dispensation, i.e. continuous specialist medical care in specialised outpatient clinics.

Post-operative care

The entire counselling process is also attended from the beginning by neonatologists who determine the options for the care of the newborn after a given surgical procedure. The Neonatology Department of our hospital can provide intensive post-operative care for newborns with selected congenital developmental defects. We work with state-of-the-art diagnostic technology and have sophisticated ventilation or circulatory support available.
