- Bulovka University Hospital
- Department of Infectious Diseases
- Národní centrum HIV/AIDS
HIV Centre is part of the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University. This workplace is dedicated exclusively to HIV infection and is the largest of its kind in the Czech Republic. More than 1900 people with HIV diagnosis are registered here in long-term care. The local team consists of experienced doctors - specialists in infectious medicine, nurses and administrative staff. Many other medical and non-medical specialties throughout the Bulovka University Hospital are involved in the follow-up care of HIV Centre patients. Preventive methods, such as pre- and post-test counselling on HIV and other infectious diseases, as well as HIV testing itself, are also part of the work. Due to the connection with the medical faculties, teaching and research activities are carried out at this department.

Information for New Patients
Have you been newly diagnosed with HIV or have you been followed for HIV infection at another Center in the country or abroad and would you like to be professionally followed at our Center? Make an appointment at our HIV Centre either by e-mail or by phone.
What will follow?
A short interview with a doctor will take place at the earliest possible date to explain the most important aspects of HIV infection, further management and treatment (for newly diagnosed persons). You will then be given an appointment for an initial blood draw and also an appointment to see a doctor for an initial clinical examination.
No appointment HIV testing
Blood draws for the unregistered
Mon-Thurs 9am-12pm
We test by venous blood collection: this test is the most accurate. The result is known the next working day and a second visit to the consulting room is required. This test examines antibodies to HIV (HIV1 and HIV2) and the p24 antigen. Testing is free of charge, covered by health insurance, please take your insurance card with you.
Only an HIV test can reliably detect HIV infection. Even a perfectly healthy-looking person can be infected. HIV infection can go on for many years in hiding without the more noticeable manifestations that are typical of other sexually transmitted diseases.
PrExposure ProphylaxisE HIV (PrEP HIV)
The PrEP program is an option for effective protection against HIV infection. Interested people are enrolled in this programme after consulting a specialist and completing the necessary tests. Preventive treatment itself consists of taking daily medication that can protect against HIV infection. Persons in this programme are continuously monitored by a medical specialist throughout their treatment. Pre-exposure prophylaxis may be ideal for some people, but it is far from the only way to protect against HIV. It is also not suitable for everyone. Come and talk to our experts about the benefits of this program and whether you are a good candidate.
To apply for HIV PrExposure Prophylaxis, please make an appointment at our HIV Center for an initial consultation, either by email or phone.
Phone number: +420 26608 2629, +420 26608 2772

What will follow?
You will make an appointment for an initial consultation to discuss all aspects of this protective therapy with your doctor and assess whether it is suitable for you. You will undergo initial laboratory tests as a prerequisite for starting treatment.
