Diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumours

An important role in the diagnosis of malignant tumours is also played by a quality examination of the tumour by a pathologist. In this era of individualized and targeted therapy, accredited centers not only provide initial information about the basic type of a given tumor, but most diagnoses nowadays break down into other subtypes.

With knowledge of the type of tumor and the extent of involvement, the oncologist selects the optimal treatment strategy. He or she uses the basic treatment modalities: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy, and targeted biological therapy, including immunotherapy.

The most important cancer therapy is surgery. The Comprehensive Cancer Centre has onco-surgical departments focusing on abdominal, thoracic, urological, gynaecological and head and neck surgery.
