Pediatric Department

The Children's Department of the Bulovka University Hospital has been functioning as an independent department of the hospital since 1 October 1949. In 1996, the department moved from its original location to the newly built Pavilion 15, where it is housed together with the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic, the Neonatology Department and the Plastic Surgery Clinic.

The department has 30 beds, including 5 lower intensive care beds. Currently we also have two extra rooms, which are preferably occupied by breastfed children with their mothers.

In the outpatient and inpatient part of the department we care for children from newborn age to 19 years. The outpatient component is divided into a general outpatient clinic and specialized outpatient clinics. Our specialties include respiratory diseases, bronchial asthma, heart diseases, endocrine diseases, kidney and urinary tract diseases and diseases of the digestive tract. Consultations with a paediatric neurologist are also available. Our doctors provide paediatric consultation service for the whole Bulovka University Hospital.

The Children's Department has a long-standing endoscopy programme within the specialised outpatient clinics, focusing on diseases of the respiratory tract, lungs and digestive tract (fibrobronchoscopy, fibrogastroduodenoscopy). We also perform functional lung investigations (spirometry, stress tests).

In the Inpatient Department we provide standard pediatric care for a wide range of pediatric diagnoses and care for patients who require a higher level of nursing care, monitoring or medical support with infusions, oxygen or intravenous medications in the intensive care unit. 

Annually, we hospitalize about 1600 pediatric patients and 1000-1100 accompanying parents.  We treat 20-25 thousand children annually in outpatient clinics.

The Children's Department of the FNB is a training facility in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Students from several medical faculties complete their paediatric internships in the department. The department is an accredited paediatric department where pre-testing training of doctors in the basic field of Paediatrics takes place, as well as training of doctors in some other fields.
