Department of Central Sterilization

Department of Central Sterilization is a specialized workplace, which by the nature of its activities plays an irreplaceable role in the prevention of nosocomial infections, and thus significantly contributes to the safe complex health care of the patient. It provides pre-sterilization preparation and sterilization of medical devices for operating theatres and other departments of Bulovka University Hospital as well as for external clients. The advantage of central sterilization is the assurance of high quality of pre-sterilization and sterilization processes, trained staff, time saving of nursing staff and last but not least, lower economic costs.

Technological procedures of pre-sterilization preparation and sterilization are carried out in compliance with valid legislation. The processes are monitored by chemical and biological indicators and their output is a sterile medical device. In 2018, the Central Sterilization Department of FNB received a certificate confirming the implementation and compliance of quality management for medical devices according to ČSN EN ISO 13485 ed. 2:2016. The certificate is renewed at prescribed intervals every 3 years.

Pre-sterilization preparation

Healthcare devices are received at the Central Sterilization Department already decontaminated with virucidal disinfectant. Pre-sterilization preparation includes mechanical cleaning and thermal disinfection in washing machines, functional and technical check and further packing of medical devices into sterilization containers and assembling of surgical instrumentation.

Sterilization

Depending on the type of medical device, we perform physical or low-temperature chemical sterilization.

Physical:

Pressure hot steam sterilization at 121°C and 134°C

Chemical:

Formaldehyde sterilization at 60 °C or 65 °C
Plasma sterilization at 51 °C

Central Treatment Room for Hospital Beds

The Central Sterilization Department also includes a Central Treatment Room for Hospital Beds, located on the ground floor of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Clinic, Pavilion No.It provides disinfection service of mattresses, bedding, rehabilitation and positioning aids, etc. Disinfection is carried out in steam disinfector on working days during the night operation from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Central Sterilization Department also provides quality services to external clients on the basis of a work contract. Certification EN ISO 13485 ed. 2:2016 - Quality Management System

In 2024, the Central Sterilization Department successfully defended the ISO 13485 certification process for the next three years.

The primary purpose of this standard is to facilitate harmonization of quality management system requirements in order to regulate the industry more effectively.

Like many other standards, ISO 13485 builds on the foundation of ISO 9001. ISO 13485 helps medical device manufacturers provide products and related services of a quality that can meet customer expectations and satisfy the legislative requirements of governmental bodies. The medical device must not harm the patient and its handling meets the regulatory intent of the industry.
